Jim Mulligan was born in 1926 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet V-5 Program on February 6, 1944, and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and designated a Naval Aviator on August 16, 1947. Mulligan stayed on active duty until November 1949, when he went into the Navy Reserve. He was activated in August 1950 and went back into the Reserve from 1952 to 1956. Captain Mulligan was on alert aboard the USS Independence during the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. In January 1966, Mulligan deployed with VA-36 and then VA-44 flying combat missions in Southeast Asia. On March 20, 1966, Mulligan was forced to eject from his A-4 Skyhawk and was taken as a Prisoner of War. After spending 2,521 days in captivity, Captain Mulligan was released during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. He retired from the Navy on July 31, 1975. Captain Mulligan flew over 80 combat missions in Vietnam and accumulated almost 5,000 hours flying time in the Navy. |
