Albert Potter was born on May 13, 1945, in Arizona. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 21, 1965, and completed basic training at MCRD San Diego, California, in December 1965. Pvt Potter next completed infantry training at MCB Camp Pendleton, California, in February 1966, and Basic Combat Engineer training as a welder at MCB Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in May 1966. His first assignment was as a welder with Headquarters & Service Company, 3rd SP Battalion of the 3rd Marine Division in South Vietnam from May to September 1966, and then as a welder with Headquarters & Service Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division in South Vietnam from September 1966 to February 1967. He then returned to Headquarters & Service Company of the 3rd SP Battalion in South Vietnam from February to December 1967, followed by service with the 3rd Combined Action Group of III Marine Amphibious Force in South Vietnam from December 1967 until he was captured and taken as a Prisoner of War on May 30, 1968. Sgt Potter managed to escape from his captors two days later, on June 1, 1968, and then returned to the United States in August 1968. His next assignment was with Headquarters & Service Company and then the Engineer Maintenance Company, Maintenance Battalion, 5th Force Service Regiment at Camp Pendleton from August 1968 to March 1969, followed by service back with the 3rd Combined Action Group of III Marine Amphibious Force in South Vietnam from March 1969 until his return to the United States in September 1969. Sgt Potter left active duty on September 7, 1969, and received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps Reserve on July 13, 1971. Albert Potter was killed in a motorcycle accident on his birthday, May 13, 1978, and was buried at the Hutchinson Eastside Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas.
