Eugene Campo was born on July 1, 1925, in Napoleonville, Louisiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on September 16, 1943, and served in combat in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on January 7, 1946, reenlisted on May 2, 1946, and was again discharged on February 11, 1948. Sgt Campo again reenlisted on March 9, 1948, and served at the Marine Barracks at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia, until August 1949, followed by service as a guard with the Marine Detachment aboard the heavy cruiser USS Macon (CA-132) from August to December 1949. His next assignment was as a guard with the Marine Detachment aboard the heavy cruiser USS Albany (CA-123) from December 1949 to April 1951, and then as a Sea School Instructor at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth from April 1951 to July 1953. TSgt Campo completed training as a Military Policeman at Camp Pendleton, California, from August to November 1953, followed by service as a Military Police Chief with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division during the ceasefire period shortly after the Korean War in South Korea from November 1953 to January 1954. His next assignment was as a Military Police Chief with the Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division in South Korea and Japan from January 1954 to March 1955, followed by service as First Sergeant with Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, from March 1955 to January 1957. He served as a Gunnery Sergeant on the Inspector/Instructor Staff with the 19th Rifle Company of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at El Paso, Texas, from January 1957 to April 1960, and then as First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company and then A Company, 1st Antitank Battalion of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton from April 1960 to January 1961. Gunnery Sergeant Campo next served as First Sergeant and Gunnery Sergeant of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division (later redesignated Company M, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division, and then Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division) at Camp Pendleton and deployed to Subic Bay in the Philippines from January 1961 to January 1963. He attended Marine Corps Drill Instructor School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, from February to April 1963, and then served as a Drill Instructor and then Chief Drill Instructor with the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at MRCD San Diego from April 1963 to April 1965. His next assignment was as First Sergeant with Headquarters and Service Company at Marine Corps Officer Candidate School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, from May 1965 to March 1966, and then as First Sergeant with Headquarters Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station Quantico from April 1966 to April 1967. He next served as First Sergeant of Company C, Battalion Landing Team 1/3 with the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade in South Vietnam from May to August 1967, followed by service as Sergeant Major and First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/3 of the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade in South Vietnam from August 1967 to June 1968. Sergeant Major Campo served as Barracks Sergeant Major with Marine Training Squadron 103 (VMT-103) at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, from June 1968 to May 1970, and then as Barracks Sergeant Major with the Marine Barracks at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until his retirement from the Marine Corps on September 1, 1972. Eugene Campo died on November 27, 2006.
