  Tribute:

Joseph McCarthy was born on July 27, 1959, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 14, 1977, and went on active duty to begin basic training on August 9, 1977. McCarthy completed basic training in October 1977, followed by Gunner's Mate A School. He next attended Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training with Class 098 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California, from February to August 1978, and then served with SEAL Team TWO at NAB Little Creek, Virginia, from August 1978 until he was killed in a traffic accident in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on February 9, 1981.
