Robert Tabb was born on April 4, 1945, in Linden, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 1, 1965, and completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in November 1965. Pvt Tabb attended Advanced Individual Training at an Infantryman at Fort Polk, Louisiana, from November 1965 to January 1966, followed by service as an Armored Personnel Carrier Driver with Company B, 1st Battalion of the 39th Infantry Regiment in West Germany from January 1966 to September 1967. He served briefly with Company M of the Quartermaster Brigade at Fort Lee, Virginia, from October to November 1967, and then as a Squad Leader with Company D, 2nd Battalion of the 14th Infantry Regiment in South Vietnam from December 1967 to June 1968. Sgt Tabb then served as a Team Leader with D Troop, 3rd Squadron of the 17th Cavalry Regiment from June 1968 to January 1969, followed by service as a Scout Observer with C and then A Troop, 3rd Squadron of the 17th Cavalry Regiment from January to July 1969. SSG Tabb served as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, from September to December 1969, and then as a Platoon Sergeant and OH-6A Cayuse Scout Observer with A Troop, 7th Squadron of the 17th Cavalry Regiment in South Vietnam from February 1970 until his helicopter was shot down and he was taken as a Prisoner of War in South Vietnam on April 12, 1970. After spending 1,081 days in captivity, SSG Tabb was released during Operation Homecoming on March 27, 1973. He was briefly hospitalized to recover from his injuries at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and then served as Senior Sergeant with the Equal Opportunity Office at the U.S. Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon from September 1973 to April 1975. His next assignment was as the Equal Opportunity NCO at the new Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon from April 1975 to February 1978, followed by service as Equal Opportunity NCO with the U.S. Army Community Activity in Mainz, West Germany, from February 1978 to May 1979. SFC Tabb served as Equal Opportunity NCO with Company A, 1st Battalion of the 2nd Signal Training Brigade at Fort Gordon from May 1979 to July 1982, and then as Equal Opportunity NCO with Company A, Headquarters Command at Fort Gordon from July 1982 to April 1984. Sergeant Major Tabb served as Operations NCO and Equal Opportunity Advisor with Company C, 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Strategic Signal Brigade (later redesignated Company C, 551st Signal Battalion) at Fort Gordon from April 1984 to April 1990. He served as NCOIC of the Equal Opportunity Office and then Chief of the Equal Opportunity Division with Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Brag, North Carolina, from May 1990 to December 1992, followed by service with Company A, 551st Signal Battalion at Fort Gordon, Georgia, from January 1993 until his retirement from the Army on February 1, 1993. Robert Tabb died on January 8, 2018, and chose to be cremated.
