George Casey was born on March 9, 1922, in Boston, Massachusetts. He entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1942, with the class of 1946, but graduated a year early, on June 5, 1945, due to World War II. Lt Casey completed the Infantry School Basic Course in November 1945, and was sent to Japan in December. He served with the 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment with the Far East Command from January 1946 to November 1948, and then served with the 17th Airborne Division at Camp Pickett, Virginia, from December 1948 to May 1949. Casey then transferred to the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment, and then the 11th Airborne Division at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, where he served from June 1949 to November 1951, when he was sent to the Far East Command for the Korean War. Casey served in combat with the 7th Infantry Division and returned to the United States in July 1952. He completed the Infantry School Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, in June 1953, and then served at the Pentagon until August 1956. Casey attended Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from September 1956 to June 1957, and then served with the XVIII Ariborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from July 1957 to August 1958. He returned to duty at the Pentagon in September 1958, and then attended National War College from August 1962 to June 1963. In August 1963, Col Casey was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 39th Infantry U.S. Army Europe, and then took command of 3rd Brigade of the 8th Infantry Division in Europe, where he served until August 1965. He attended Harvard University and then the Defense Language Institute from September 1965 to August 1966, and was then sent to Southeast Asia where he served as Chief of Staff of 2nd Brigade, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, from September 1966 to October 1967. Gen Casey served with U.S. Army Combat Developments Command at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, from October 1967 to August 1968, and then as Commanding General of the U.S. Army Combat Developments Command Combat Arms Group at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from September 1968 to July 1969. He was then assigned as Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division in the Republic of Vietnam in August 1969. Maj Gen George Casey was killed in action on July 7, 1970, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
