Henry Kucheman was born on June 8, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland. He entered the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces on July 12, 1941, and was commissioned a 2d Lt and awarded his pilot wings at Kelly Field, Texas, on February 4, 1942. Lt Kucheman was assigned to the 10th Fighter Squadron of the 50th Fighter Group at Orlando Army Air Field, Florida, from February 1942 to January 1943, and then with the 354th Fighter Squadron of the 355th Fighter Group, deploying with the group to England in July 1943. Kucheman served as Operations Officer and later as Commander of the 354th Fighter Squadron, destroying 4 enemy aircraft in aerial combat plus 4 damaged and 2 more on the ground while strafing enemy airfields, before returning to the U.S. in November 1944. He served as an instructor pilot from November 1944 to March 1946, and then as Operations Officer for the 86th Fighter Group and Assistant for Operations and Training of the 64th Fighter Wing in Germany from March 1946 to May 1947. Col Kucheman served at Headquarters Tactical Air Command at Langley Field, Virginia, from May to August 1947, and then attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute to complete his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from August 1947 to June 1949. He served at Headquarters U.S. Air Force at the Pentagon from June 1949 to November 1953, and then with the Air Force Armament Center at Eglin AFB, Florida, from November 1953 to August 1959. Col Kucheman attended the Industrial College of the Air Force from August 1959 to July 1960, and then served with the Ballistic Missile Division and the Space Systems Division at Los Angeles AFS, California, from July 1960 to February 1966. Gen Kucheman served as Deputy for Limited War in the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio, from February to October 1966, and then as the Vice Commander of the Aeronautical Systems Division from October 1966 to June 1968. He served in Research and Development at Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Pentagon from June 1968 to March 1972, and then served as Deputy Commandant of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., until October 1972. Gen Kucheman's final assignment was as Commander of the Armament Development and Test Center at Eglin AFB, where he served from October 1972 until his retirement from the Air Force on September 1, 1975. Henry Kucheman died on April 16, 1987, and was buried at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
