Bob Ammon was born on July 8, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve on June 11, 1942, and entered the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces on December 4, 1942. Ammon was commissioned a 2d Lt and awarded his pilot wings on October 1, 1943, and after completing P-51 Mustang training, he joined the 503rd Fighter Squadron of the 339th Fighter Group in Europe in May 1944. Lt Ammon was credited with the destruction of 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat, plus 2 damaged, before serving with the 504th Fighter Squadron, also in the 339th Fighter Group, from January to March 1945. He then returned to the 503rd Fighter Squadron, where he served until returning to the U.S. in August 1945. Ammon left active duty and joined the Air Force Reserve on December 3, 1945, and returned to active duty on November 1, 1947. He served with Air Defense Command at Mitchel AFB, New York, from December 1947 to August 1950, followed by an Air Force Institute of Technology assignment from August 1950 to September 1951. Maj Ammon served with Headquarters 3rd Air Force in England from October 1951 to September 1954, and then served as a Material Inspector with the 26th Air Division at Roslyn, New York, from October 1954 to April 1956. He served as Chief of the Contract Division with Headquarters Middletown Air Material Area stationed in New York City from April 1956 to June 1961, followed by service as Chief of the Pricing and Finance Division, Executive to the Commander, Director of Contracts, and Commander of the Air Force Plant Representative Office to Republic Aviation Corporation at Olmsted AFB, Pennsylvania, from June 1961 to November 1965. His final assignment was as Chief of the Contract Administration Division at Garden City, New York, from November 1965 until his retirement from the Air Force on May 31, 1967. Bob Ammon died on October 28, 1973.
