Frank Hallyburton was born on August 16, 1895, in Stony Point, North Carolina. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 19, 1917, and was trained at Camp Jackson, South Carolina, and Camp Forest, Georgia, before sailing for France in April 1918. Pvt Hallyburton reached the front lines in France with Headquarters Company, 11th Infantry, in May 1918, and served in the trenches and at the Battle of Argonne, where he was wounded on October 20, 1918. After spending several months in hospitals in France, Pvt Hallyburton returned to the U.S. in April 1919, and received an honorable discharge the same month. It was later discovered that some shrapnel had not been removed from his head wound he received in combat, and he died from his injuries on April 5, 1922, and was buried in Taylorsville, North Carolina.
